Golden gravel kilometres with a view of the lake
First gravel, then spritzer -
Pure gravel bliss between vine leaves and Lake Kaltern
October is our favourite time for road and gravel biking. Not because it's faster - but because it's nicer. In spring, you want to tear it up, but your fitness is often still in hibernation. In summer, it's time to start early before the sun burns mercilessly. And in autumn? You set off after breakfast. Without stress. Without the feeling of missing something. Less traffic, warm colours, clear air. Short-short on the climbs, a change of jersey and a thin jacket for the descent. Perfect.
5 GOOD REASONS FOR A CYCLING HOLIDAY OVER EASTER AT LAKE KALTERER SEE
And it feels particularly light around Lake Kaltern. The air is mild, the sky is clear, the meadows are in bloom - and your head is clearer with every step. You can cycle around the lake at a leisurely pace, in no hurry at all. Or you can turn off into the vineyards, where the paths become steeper and the views greater. Everyone will find the right tour here: relaxed or sporty, short or long. Afterwards, the hotel awaits: for a swim, sauna, rest, soak up the sun and enjoy an aperitif.
The lake can surprise you in spring. While a cool wind still blows up on the mountain, it quickly becomes pleasant down here. The sun is higher, the days are getting longer and the water collects warmth - quietly and patiently. It often doesn't take long before the first dip in the blue is possible again. Maybe just to catch your breath, maybe just to dip your feet in. But the feeling is there: summer is not far away. And Lake Kaltern is already starting to feel like a holiday.
The apple blossom enchants the landscape around Lake Kaltern every year. When spring really arrives, the orchards suddenly brighten up - a white and pink sea of blossoms, so delicate that you can almost walk more quietly. The scent is in the air as you cycle or walk, and the first bees begin to buzz between the branches, busy and happy. New life is also stirring in the vineyards. Tender leaves sprout, the meadows glow a lush green. Everything seems fresh, light and full of new beginnings. A time when you prefer to be outdoors - and feel South Tyrol up close.
In spring, short rain showers tend to pass through, the south wind picks up and it gets a little rougher. And that's perfectly fine. Because that's exactly when it's good to go inside - in the truest sense of the word. After a bike ride or a walk through the apple blossom, warmth awaits: sauna, steam bath, peace and quiet. The muscles soften, the mind becomes still. A few lengths in the heated pool, maybe a massage, maybe yoga. And afterwards: lie down, read, let go or listen to vinyl records and have a drink at the hotel bar. This makes a holiday easy, even without the sun. And really relaxing.
In spring, it is best to cycle the Mendola Tour in reverse. This way, you always have the warming sun in your face on the 30 kilometres of ascent from Mezzolombardo - and the expansive Non Valley as a silent companion. The view becomes wider, the rhythm calmer and suddenly every metre of ascent feels easier. A short stop at Lago di S. Giustina is worthwhile: the unicorn by the artist Martelar, built from branches and roots, is waiting there. And in Cavareno? A gelato in the famous gelateria. Perfect!

Interview with Olympic champion and good friend
of the house of Mario Kummer
How do you recover after a long and strenuous cycle tour?
- The best way to recover after a long bike ride is to eat and drink well to make up for the energy and fluid deficits you have incurred.
- A short stretching programme helps to loosen up the muscles.
- A loose muscle simply regenerates better.
- A sports massage or later before dinner one or 2 Sauna sessions also contribute very well to being fit again the next day.
What should I eat before, during and after the tour?
- A good, varied breakfast, ideally 2 hours before the tour, provides the basis.
- It is important to make sure you have enough carbohydrates.
During the tour you need to drink enough and, depending on the length and intensity, always top up on carbohydrates in small quantities. - Dried fruit or energy bars are particularly suitable for this. Gels are primarily useful if you are riding very intensively.
- A short coffee stop is also always a good change and ideal for hydration and energy intake.
- After the tour, the aim is to quickly re-energise the body so that it can regenerate well and be fit again for the next day.
Do you have any other tips for nutrition?
- A balanced diet throughout the day is very important.
- It should contain enough fluids, carbohydrates, proteins, good fats, vitamins and minerals.
- In my opinion, all of this can be realised very well with natural products.
- Food and fluids should always be consumed continuously, never in large quantities, as this only strains the digestive system.
- This is particularly important in the evening in order to get a good night's sleep. Sleep is the best and most important form of regeneration.
